Design And Build quality

Realme is experienced in making good-looking phones, and the Realme 8i is yet another example of that. It’s your typical flat front/curved back design, with a cool gradient paint job that spreads across the frame as well.
The 6.6-inch LCD screen is covered by flat tempered glass, then comes the flat plastic frame with grippy chamfers, and finally, we feast our eyes on the flashy curved back.

The Realme 8i features a 6.6-inch IPS LCD screen of 1,080 x 2,412 pixels. It supports a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate and can switch between 30Hz, 48Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz on the go. The touch sensors work with a 180Hz sampling rate. There is no HDR support.
Realme promises 600 nits of peak brightness for the screen. We did our usual measurements, and the display maxed out at 433 nits when we adjusted the brightness manually. When faced with bright light and set on Auto Brightness, the panel can go as high 540 nits.

The Realme 8i is the first smartphone we meet running on the Helio G96 chipset by MediaTek. It is fabricated on the 12nm FinFET manufacturing process from TSMC, just like the previous G9x chips.

The Helio G96 has the same octa-core CPU as the Helio G90, G90T and G95 – it packs two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores ticking at 2.05GHz and six energy-efficient Corext-A55 cores working at 2.0GHz.

The Helio G96 chip features a new GPU from the Valhalla generation by ARM – the Mali-G57. Unlike the previous G9x chips, here we have a dual-core configuration instead of quad-core, so we can’t say yet if we’ll see an improved performance or not. It does support a 120Hz refresh rate, but it’s another thing if it will be able to reach 120fps in games (probably not).

Realme UI on top of Android 11

The Realme 8i runs on Android 11 with Realme UI 2.0. The second version of Realme’s launcher offers richer customization options, a couple of extra Dark Mode styles, refined floating and mini windows, and enhanced security.

The phone supports fingerprint unlock, and the side-mounted sensor works flawlessly – it’s fast and with high accuracy. You can also set up face unlock for an even speedier unlock – though this is not as secure.

The Realme 8i has three snappers on its back – a primary 50MP camera with a wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro shooter, and a 2MP monochrome depth sensor. There is also a 16MP selfie camera within the screen’s round hole.

The Realme 8i’s primary camera utilizes a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL S5KJN1 1/2.76″” sensor with Tetracell filter and 0.64µm pixels (same as on Redmi 10). The sensor is coupled with an f/1.8 lens and supports PDAF. Night Mode is available on this camera.

The macro camera has 2MP GalaxyCore GC02M1 sensor with 1.75µm pixels and f/2.4 aperture but lacks autofocus.
Finally, there is a 2MP OmniVision OV02B1 monochrome depth sensor.
The selfie camera uses a 16MP SK Hynix Hi-1364Q 1/3″ sensor with 1.0µm pixels. And It has f/2.05 lens, and the focus is fixed.
